What is Scalp Micro-pigmentation
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) offers a quick, reliable, and lasting way to address many types of hair loss. The treatment involves using ultra-fine needles to place tiny, pigment-filled impressions on the scalp.
Often called a “hair tattoo,” however SMP is quite different to traditional tattooing. It’s a precise, technique-driven procedure where skilled specialists replicate the look of natural hair follicles. The result is a realistic, soft hairline and/or the appearance of thicker, fuller hair.

Understanding The Basics
Scalp Micropigmentation, or SMP, is a highly detailed cosmetic treatment that recreates the natural appearance of hair follicles on the scalp. Using micro-needles and specialised pigments matched to your hair and skin tone, we place thousands of tiny impressions that mimic the look of real stubble or thicker density through thinning hair (reducing the contrast of the hair and scalp). The result is a natural illusion of fuller hair, a restored hairline, or soft coverage over scars or bald patches all without surgery, tonics, pills or harsh chemicals.
Although SMP is often compared to a tattoo, it’s actually quite different. Traditional tattooing injects ink much deeper into the skin and uses pigments designed for body art, which can spread or change colour over time. SMP uses medical-grade scalp pigments and ultra-fine needles at a very shallow depth, giving realistic, soft dots that stay true to colour and blend seamlessly with your existing hair. Safety, Pain & Recovery

The sensation is more like light scratching than a tattoo, and we work at a shallower depth with topical numbing if needed to keep you relaxed throughout. Everyone’s tolerance is different, but nearly all describe it as mild discomfort rather than pain.
There’s virtually no downtime after your session. You can return to work the next day, just avoid heavy sweating, swimming, or direct sun for a few days while the scalp settles. You’ll notice slight redness for 24–48 hours, which fades quickly.
Our pigments are specially formulated for the scalp, designed to hold their natural tone for years without turning blue or green. They fade gradually and evenly over time, allowing for small top-ups to refresh your look when needed. SMP is safe for all skin types and most scalp conditions, but we always assess your skin beforehand to ensure it’s ready for treatment. If you ever wish to adjust or remove your SMP, laser and saline removal options are available, though they’re rarely needed.
Aftercare is simple, gentle washing (after a few days), light moisturising, and avoiding harsh shampoos or exfoliants (for a week or two). We’ll walk you through a clear aftercare plan so healing is quick, consistent, and stress-free.

Many of our clients come to us after a hair transplant, and yes, you can absolutely still have SMP (before and after). In fact, it’s a powerful combination. Transplants move real hair into thinning areas, but often don’t restore the full appearance of density. SMP fills in the gaps, blends the donor area, and can also disguise linear FUT scars or small FUE dot scars. If you’re planning both, we usually recommend doing the transplant first, then SMP once everything has healed (18 months), though in some cases, SMP alone gives the cleaner, more uniform result.
