What is Scalp Micro-pigmentation
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) offers a quick, reliable, and lasting way to address many types of hair loss. The treatment involves using ultra-fine needles to place tiny, pigment-filled impressions on the scalp.
Often called a “hair tattoo,” however SMP is quite different to traditional tattooing. It’s a precise, technique-driven procedure where skilled specialists replicate the look of natural hair follicles. The result is a realistic, soft hairline and/or the appearance of thicker, fuller hair.

Understanding The Basics
Scalp Micropigmentation, or SMP, is a highly detailed cosmetic treatment that recreates the natural appearance of hair follicles on the scalp. Using micro-needles and specialised pigments matched to your hair and skin tone, we place thousands of tiny impressions that mimic the look of real stubble or thicker density through thinning hair (reducing the contrast of the hair and scalp). The result is a natural illusion of fuller hair, a restored hairline, or soft coverage over scars or bald patches all without surgery, tonics, pills or harsh chemicals.
Although SMP is often compared to a tattoo, it’s actually quite different. Traditional tattooing injects ink much deeper into the skin and uses pigments designed for body art, which can spread or change colour over time. SMP uses medical-grade scalp pigments and ultra-fine needles at a very shallow depth, giving realistic, soft dots that stay true to colour and blend seamlessly with your existing hair. This precision is what keeps SMP looking natural, not like a series of dots, but "like" the texture of real, freshly shaved follicles. below are some images to help you picture the result.
At its core, SMP works through precision layering. Over two to four sessions, the pigment density is gradually built up in natural tones and densities, creating a smooth, lifelike finish that’s unique to every client. Each session typically lasts between two and four hours, depending on the size of the area being treated. The technique is completely tailored, whether you’re looking to rebuild a strong hairline, fill in thinning areas, or disguise transplant or injury scars.
SMP is considered semi-permanent. The pigment sits close to the skin’s surface, allowing it to fade gently over several years. This gradual fade keeps the result looking natural as your skin tone changes and makes it easy to refresh with a simple top-up later. There’s minimal downtime and no invasive healing process, most people are back to their routine the next day but with some simple after care.
And yes, SMP is suitable for both men and women. Men often choose it to recreate a clean buzz-cut or sharper hairline, while women use it to reduce scalp contrast and make thinning hair look fuller. At PinPoint SMP, we’ve personally experienced both transplants and SMP ourselves, so we understand the emotions behind hair loss. That’s why every treatment is approached with empathy, precision, and the goal of helping you find the most confident, natural version of yourself.

The hair-loss cycle
Where are you on this journey?

Results & Realism
One of the most common worries people have before starting SMP is whether it will look obvious, and the simple answer is no. When done correctly, SMP is virtually undetectable. Friends and family may notice that you look fresher, sharper, or more confident, but they won’t be able to pinpoint why. Each microdot is placed to mimic your natural hair follicles in tone, size, and pattern, position, blending perfectly with any existing hair. The result is subtle and incredibly realistic, even up close.
At PinPoint SMP, we customise every treatment to your unique features and goals. You’re not locked into a single “style”, you can choose the shape of your hairline, the density of your coverage, and even the level of softness or sharpness you prefer, we can accentuate scars or hide them. Whether you want a natural, matured hairline or a crisp, more defined edge, we design it together before the first session. This ensures your SMP feels like you, not a one-size-fits-all look.
Lighting is another common concern. Because we use layered pigments and multiple tones matched to your natural colouring, your SMP will look authentic in every light, indoors, outdoors, bright sunlight, or shade. We test pigment tones against your skin under different lighting during the process to guarantee a consistent, natural finish from every angle.
Seeing is believing, which is why we’re proud to show before-and-after photos of PinPoint SMP clients. These aren’t stock images or filtered edits, they’re genuine results from people who felt exactly how you might feel right now: hesitant, curious, but ready to look like themselves again.
And yes, SMP suits all skin tones and hair colours. Each pigment is mixed to complement your complexion and natural hair shade, ensuring seamless, realistic blending, whether your tone is light, olive, or deep. We’ve been through both transplants and SMP ourselves, so we understand what “natural” truly means and how important it is that your result looks effortless. Our goal is simple: to help you walk out confident that your SMP enhances your look, not changes who you are.

Scar Concealment

Safety, Pain & Recovery
Most clients are surprised at how comfortable SMP feels. The sensation is more like light scratching than a tattoo, and we work at a shallower depth with topical numbing if needed to keep you relaxed throughout. Everyone’s tolerance is different, but nearly all describe it as mild discomfort rather than pain.
There’s virtually no downtime after your session. You can return to work the next day, just avoid heavy sweating, swimming, or direct sun for a few days while the scalp settles. You’ll notice slight redness for 24–48 hours, which fades quickly.
Our pigments are specially formulated for the scalp, designed to hold their natural tone for years without turning blue or green. They fade gradually and evenly over time, allowing for small top-ups to refresh your look when needed. SMP is safe for all skin types and most scalp conditions, but we always assess your skin beforehand to ensure it’s ready for treatment. If you ever wish to adjust or remove your SMP, laser and saline removal options are available, though they’re rarely needed.
Aftercare is simple, gentle washing (after a few days), light moisturising, and avoiding harsh shampoos or exfoliants (for a week or two). We’ll walk you through a clear aftercare plan so healing is quick, consistent, and stress-free.
At PinPoint SMP, safety and realism come first. We’ve been through the process ourselves, so we know how important it is to feel confident, informed, and completely comfortable from start to finish.
Cost & Commitment
The cost of Scalp Micropigmentation depends on the area being treated, the level of hair loss, and the number of sessions required. On average, most clients invest between $1,000 and $4,000 for a complete treatment plan. Smaller areas such as scars or partial hairlines cost less, while full-head coverage is toward the higher end.
Prices can vary widely between clinics because SMP is an art as much as a procedure. Factors like the technician’s experience, pigment quality, and session time all play a role. At PinPoint SMP, we don’t compete to be the cheapest, we focus on natural results that last. Every session is designed around your specific pattern and skin tone, performed by artists who’ve had both transplants and SMP themselves.
SMP is a long-term investment rather than a one-time fix. While results typically last four to six years, gentle fading is normal and actually keeps your look natural. A simple top-up every few years helps maintain tone and density. Compared to a surgical hair transplant, which can cost tens of thousands, requires healing time, and may still need SMP later for density, SMP offers a more affordable, low-maintenance path to a consistent, confident look.
Maintenance is minimal: keep your scalp healthy, moisturised, and protected from the sun, and your results will stay fresh for years.
At PinPoint SMP, we believe in honest pricing and clear expectations, no surprises, no sales pressure, just straightforward advice and lasting results.
Suitability & Comparison
Scalp Micropigmentation is incredibly versatile and can be tailored to almost every type of hair loss. Whether you’ve just started thinning, have advanced baldness, or are dealing with scarring or alopecia Areata, SMP can create the look of density and redefine your hairline in a way that fits you naturally. It’s suitable for all ages(18+), skin tones, and hair colours, because every treatment is fully customised to your unique pattern and goals.
If you still have some hair, SMP works beautifully to add the illusion of fullness by reducing the contrast between your scalp and hair. It can make fine or thinning areas look denser without the need to shave everything down. For clients who prefer to keep a short buzz-cut, SMP blends perfectly to create an even, consistent look from every angle.
Many of our clients come to us after a hair transplant, and yes, you can absolutely still have SMP (before and after). In fact, it’s a powerful combination. Transplants move real hair into thinning areas, but often don’t restore the full appearance of density. SMP fills in the gaps, blends the donor area, and can also disguise linear FUT scars or small FUE dot scars. If you’re planning both, we usually recommend doing the transplant first, then SMP once everything has healed (18 months), though in some cases, SMP alone gives the cleaner, more uniform result.
Compared to temporary fixes like fibres, sprays, or wigs, SMP is low-maintenance and long-lasting. You don’t have to worry about rain, sweat, or daily application, your look is always ready. Fibres can be a short-term boost, but they often look uneven and need constant touch-ups. SMP is a more reliable, confidence-building solution that stays consistent in every light and situation.
SMP is also effective for alopecia and patchy thinning. By recreating the appearance of tiny follicles across affected areas, it softens harsh contrast and helps restore balance to your overall look. For many clients with alopecia, the transformation isn’t just visual, it’s deeply emotional.
At PinPoint SMP, we’ve experienced both transplants and SMP ourselves, so we understand the choices, the hesitations, and the relief that comes when you finally find something that works. Our goal is to guide you toward the solution that fits your life, whether that’s SMP alone, or SMP combined with other treatments, and help you feel like yourself again, every day.
